MLM Prospecting - Tips and Secrets to MLM Success

There are a ton of ways you can market your products or business opportunity in your local area... and it's not just those little signs at the street corners.

Flyers - Flyers are a local marketers best friend. They allow you to target groups and/or locations precisely. First off, you want people in your area because of the simple logistics of working with people close to you versus farter away. Hand them out at events related to your product or service. If you represent a vitamin company, go to a health fair and hand out flyers. Make your flyers eye-catching and try to use some pictures if possible as the read-through rate goes way up on an attractive flyer versus one just packed with text.

Business cards - It really doesn't get any more important than your business card. When you originally price them, you see a wide range of costs and are usually tempted to go with the cheapest price because you see it as only an expense. It is NOT an expense, it is the ONLY face a customer will see after you have walked away. When they look at the card a week later, it's look will be the only important piece of marketing you have done. This doesn't mean spend the most you can because we all know you can get taken to the cleaners on anything. What is means is make sure that the card represents the image you want to portray. If you sell the finest skin care products in the world, don't hand them the cheapest card they have ever seen... it will reflect on your product in their mind. Like flyers, hand them out everywhere.

Another great idea for business cards is to use them for double-duty. Use the back of your card. Sure the costs double to print on the back, but if you do it wisely, your sales will too. Print a coupon on the back that entices them to contact you and purchase. Print a quiz that leads them to your product. Print testimonials of satisfied customers. Be creative - do NOT just put another slogan on the back... make sure that the reader clearly sees a benefit to them... not just catchy phrases about you.

Canvassing - If you have the grit to handle rejection, canvassing may be for you. What you will find in canvassing is success through piles of failure. Canvassing consists of going door-to-door and telling people about your product/business. The bad news is that you will undoubtedly get the door slammed in your face many, many, times. The good new is that there IS success in canvassing. It is simply a numbers game. If you talk to enough people, someone will be interested. After all, you were interested when you started.

Contests - Everyone likes to win something. Take advantage of that by creating fun and interesting contests often. There are dozens of ways to run contests. They can be as simple as putting up a fishbowl at a local area restaurant for a free meal. You pay for the meal, take all the business card, compile a list, give one copy to the restaurant and keep a copy for your own marketing. Let's say you sell hair products - offer a gift basket at a tanning salon or related location and do the exact same thing. They have the customers you want to get in front of. You have the free gift basket. You both get the information for marketing.

What about trade shows and fairs? You can use contests to greatly increase your results from these events. This can be a very strategic part of your marketing plan. Either give away one big prize (preferably linked in some way to your message at the fair) or give away many small ones and make everyone a winner. The small prizes can be samples of your product, an e-book they can collect at your website, a free subscription to your newsletter or a combination of all of the above. You can give away free seminars about starting your own home business or a free consultation about how you can raise their bottom line with your products or services.

Just giving away some large prize can attract a lot of people to your booth, but it can also be very expensive and attract attention away from your message. Giving away a lot of little prizes that totally relate to what you are trying to say helps cement your booth in their memory and helps them remember why they came to your booth in the first place.

Become an Expert - Speaking on your topic can greatly increase your exposure and customer base. There are hundreds of breakfast clubs, exchange clubs, special interest groups, chambers of commerce etc. and they are ALL looking for speakers. Surely, you can find a way to relate your nutritional company to just about any club - afterall, don't business owners, dog lovers, quilters and more need nutrition? Make your presentation appropriate to their interest and you will be not only well-received, but likely asked back again and again.

Not a great speaker? Get someone in your organization who is and get out there. Or better yet - become one! There are great groups like Toastmasters in every city that will help you create your inborn abilities as a public speaker. The more your face and name are in front of people, the more serious they will take your business.

Fund Raisers - There are a lot of ways to do fund-raisers, if your product lends itself to that. Probably the best fund-raising idea is attached to a product that gives you a residual income. For instance, if you get $50 for every free cell phone you give away that is activated, an organization could give away stacks of FREE CELL PHONE gift certificates to everyone in their group and you give them the deal that every for every cell phone that is activated in a specific period of time you will give the organization $20.

Let them know that newspapers, radio stations and tv stations will often give them free advertising space to advertise their fund-raiser, so it could be pretty big pretty fast and they don’t have to sell anything or keep track of an inventory of candy bars or do anything but give the FREE CELL PHONE certificates away to their friends, neighbors and business colleagues. Be sure and let them know about when they can expect to be paid for their efforts and how you will be keeping track of sales within the specified sales period.

If you have a product with wide spread appeal, like a stain-remover or sun-block or first aid cream, you can put together a sales flyer that the organization gives out to everyone they know and take orders. You give them an order deadline and they collect the money and you deliver. Give them an adequate and reasonable delivery time to prevent putting a sour taste to an otherwise successful campaign.

Sponsoring Events - If you are a sports buff or your product has an appeal to physically active adults and children, you may find it worthwhile to sponsor a pee-wee team or an adult team in your favorite sport, not to mention sponsoring marathon runners or special Olympics or bowling leagues or paintball teams…you get the idea. Usually that sponsorship gets you prominently mentioned in their programs, on their uniforms and even announced from the announcer’s box, if that is appropriate.

If you do support a team, become a true booster. Attend the games and make yourself a prominent cheerleader for “your” team. Get your picture taken with them. Take them out for pizza for a great or (maybe even more importantly) a lousy game. If the team has a t-shirt, buy one and wear it to the games. The families of the participants will love you for it, and you might get the opportunity to speak to them at a game about your great product.

If you have a blooming downline, encourage them to attend and support (financially as well as emotionally) the TEAM’s Team. You could even hold some impromptu sales meetings at the games. A great way build curiosity about your business as well as your product.

Misc. Tips
Use coupons extensively. Buy one get one free. For a limited time; buy as many products as you want at the dealer’s cost. Get your products free; let me show you how. Money back guarantee – no questions asked. Wear a button: “$5,000 in tax deductions; ask me how.” Car signs. Bumper stickers. T-Shirts. This list is only limited by your imagination. Get creative. Try things out - see what works and what doesn't. Most of all - keep doing it and enjoy the results!
